Letter of the university leadership
Dear Colleague,
I would like to inform you that, based on the consultations, professional discussions and analyses of the past months, the University has reached a decision regarding its learning management systems. Maintaining the currently parallel systems (Canvas and Moodle) has proved unsustainable in the long term; therefore, selecting a unified solution has become essential. After evaluating all relevant considerations during the consultation process, the University leadership has chosen Moodle as the platform that best aligns with our educational, IT and institutional goals. Why is this necessary, what is this all about?
I would like to emphasize that the primary purpose of this message is to provide information. We will keep you updated on the progress of the transition that concerns you, on the tasks ahead, and on the background processes, so that you will have all the necessary information at the appropriate time.
Planned timetable for the transition:
| December 2025 | We will launch a survey on LMS usage habits to enable us to plan the support in the most personalized way possible. |
| January–February 2026 | Evaluation of the survey results and detailed planning of the transition process and the support for instructors. |
| From March 2026 | Based on the submitted requests, central migration of Canvas courses for the faculties in the first transition group (see below), using the end-of-February course state as the basis; continuous provision of consultations, LMS usage guides and learning materials at least until the end of the 2026/2027 academic year. |
| From May 2026 | The new Moodle interface (version 5) will become available. |
| May–September 2026 | Transition of courses at the first five faculties (ÁJK, BDPK, BTK, GTK, TTK). Autumn semester courses will be available from May; from August instructors may enable student access; the system will go live in September. |
| From August 2026 | Based on submitted requests, central migration of Canvas courses for the faculties in the second transition group (see below), using the end-of-July course state as the basis. |
| October 2026 – February 2027 | Transition of courses at the second group of faculties (BGGYK, IK, PPK, TÁTK, TÓK). Spring semester courses will be available from October; student access from mid-January; live launch in February. |
Thus, instructors of ÁJK, BDPK, BTK, GTK and TTK will be able to launch their courses exclusively in Moodle from September 2026, while instructors of BGGYK, IK, PPK, TÁTK and TÓK will be able to do so exclusively from February 2027.
Canvas will remain accessible; we do not plan to “shut it down” at this stage, and everyone will be notified in due time of any discontinuation following full transition. However, we would like to draw your attention to the fact that the security risk related to Canvas—one of the factors prompting a review of our LMS choices—may result in an earlier shutdown than currently planned.

In a message to be sent in December, you will receive a questionnaire that will be essential for planning the support required for the transition. We kindly ask you to take a few minutes to complete it, as your responses will help determine in which areas, in what form and to what extent you may need assistance. We will also provide IT support for the transition: in the questionnaire you will need to indicate the courses for which you request migration by the IT Directorate. It is important to note that we can only migrate those courses according to the planned schedule that you explicitly designate in the questionnaire. You will have the opportunity to submit migration requests later as well, but in that case, courses scheduled for migration according to the timeline will take priority over yours. Our aim is to ensure that the transition causes as little inconvenience for you as possible. Within our capabilities, we will provide personalized support to every instructor, so that each of you can join the process at your own pace and according to your individual needs.
